OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, recently announced that the company’s AI systems are now utilized by approximately 800 million people worldwide, accounting for about 10% of the global population. This rapid growth has been fueled by viral features, such as the ability to generate images and videos in various styles, including those reminiscent of renowned Japanese animation studio, Studio Ghibli.

In a recent TED 2025 event, Altman discussed the possibility of compensating artists when their unique styles are used to generate content. He suggested implementing prompts that could trigger payments to specific artists, stating, “I think it would be cool to figure out a new model where if you say, ‘I want to do it in the name of this artist,’ and they opt in, there’s a revenue model there.”

Altman also highlighted OpenAI’s commitment to ethical AI usage by implementing guidelines that prevent their models from generating images in the styles of specific artists or creators without consent. Additionally, he touched upon the company’s ongoing work on AI agents—models designed to operate autonomously on behalf of users.

As OpenAI continues to expand its user base and develop new AI capabilities, the company remains focused on addressing ethical considerations and exploring innovative ways to collaborate with the creative community.
