In a significant move for the AI industry, startup Anthropic announced on Monday that it has successfully raised $3.5 billion in a Series E funding round, valuing the company at an impressive $61.5 billion post-money. The round was spearheaded by Lightspeed Venture Partners, with substantial contributions from Bessemer Venture Partners, Cisco Investments, D1 Capital Partners, Fidelity Management & Research Company, General Catalyst, Jane Street, Menlo Ventures, and Salesforce Ventures. This latest funding elevates Anthropic’s total investment to an impressive $18.2 billion, as per Crunchbase records.

According to Anthropic’s statement, this substantial investment will be channeled towards:

  • Enhancing its next-generation AI systems

  • Broadening its computing capabilities

  • Conducting in-depth research in mechanistic interpretability and alignment

  • Expediting its international growth

Anthropic is committed to developing AI systems that act as genuine collaborators, aiding teams in tackling complex challenges, synthesizing information across various domains, and helping organizations achieve significant impact.

This enormous fundraising effort coincides with the recent launch of Anthropic’s flagship AI model, Claude 3.7 Sonnet. This “hybrid reasoning” model is designed to thoughtfully analyze queries before responding, part of Anthropic’s larger initiative to streamline the user experience for its AI offerings. While many AI solutions today inundate users with a variety of model choices that differ in cost and capability, Anthropic’s strategy is to simplify by enabling a single model to handle all tasks seamlessly.

Business Growth and Financials

Anthropic’s business trajectory is upward, evidenced by its annual revenue run rate, which was approximately $1 billion last year. This figure has grown by 30% in 2025, driven by revenue from its model-serving API and increased subscriptions to its AI chatbot, Claude. However, the company’s development efforts are capital-intensive; Anthropic has informed investors of an anticipated $3 billion expenditure this year, as reported by The Information.

To enhance profitability, Anthropic is also diversifying its offerings. It has launched new tools and subscription tiers, including:

  • Computer-using “agents”

  • A desktop application

  • Mobile apps

Moreover, the company has expanded its presence in Europe and made strategic high-level appointments, bringing on board industry veterans like Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger, OpenAI co-founder Durk Kingma, and former OpenAI safety researcher Jan Leike.

Strategic Partnerships

The startup has also deepened its collaboration with Amazon, now a key investor and partner. Last November, Amazon invested an additional $4 billion in the company and announced plans to collaborate with Anthropic on optimizing its Trainium AI chips for model training. This partnership extends to developing an enhanced Alexa virtual assistant, Alexa+, where Anthropic’s models play an integral role.

Founding and Vision

Founded in 2021 by CEO Dario Amodei, previously OpenAI’s VP of Research, Anthropic was established following internal disagreements over OpenAI’s direction. Amodei, accompanied by several ex-OpenAI colleagues, including former policy lead Jack Clark, founded Anthropic with a vision to focus more closely on AI safety, often casting it as a core differentiator from OpenAI.
